Tennessee is located in the Southeastern region of the United States. It is bordered on the north by Kentucy, the northeast by Virginia, the east by North Carolina, the south by Alabama, Georgia and Mississipi, the southwest by Arkansas, and the northwest by Missouri. It was admitted to the Union on June 1, 1796 as the 16th state. It is nicknamed "The Volunteer State" early on because of its strong tradition of military service.

The city of Memphis was founded by then future president Andrew Jackson, John Overton and James Winchester on May 22, 1819. Graceland, the former home of Elvis Presley is located there. It is one of the most visited private residences in the United States, being second only to the White House in Washington, D.C.

Today Tennessee has 96 counties and covers approximately 42,143 square miles. Nashville is the State capital and largest city.
