California is most popularly known as "The Golden State." It is located on the Pacific Coast of the United States and is bordered on the north by Oregon, Arizona and Nevada to the east, and the Mexican state of Baja California on the south. It was admitted to the Union as the 31st state on September 9, 1850

Today California covers 163,696 square miles of land, has 58 counties and ranks 3rd in population. The State Capitol is Sacramento and the largest city is Los Angeles.
