B. Cutright Buckhannon, W. Va., July 1, 1907 Page 504 GRANVILLE DEXTER MARPLE, was born June 28, 1833, in Harrison County. His parents were Moses Marple and Elizabeth Bennett. He had two sisters, Mary and Martha. His father settled on the waters of Peck's Run, on leaving Harrison County. He is a farmer of Buckhannon District, now owning two hundred and thirty acres of valuable coal and grass land near Lorentz. He has been a District and County officer many years since the formation of the County in 1861. His first office was that of Constable from 1854 to 1856. He was County Supervisor from 1866 to 1868. He served one term as land assessor of Upshur County and was assessor of personal property for eight years; he was Justice of the Peace for one year and was elected Sheriff of Upshur County in 1880. His father was the son of John Marple and Barbara Weaver of Pennsylvania. His grandfather was a soldier in the War of 1812, and emigrated from Pennsylvania to Virginia in 1815, when his father was eighteen years of age. He married Eliza Loudin, daughter of Walter Loudin and Nancy Conley, February 14, 1856. Children: Albert J., Moses Franklin, Grace, the wife of Rev. J. S. W.
