There was a smooth draw slate about two inches thick over coal, which was cracked and when crack was undermined, coal fell without warning. There was some misunderstanding, as his partner fired a shot while he was knocking and blew some slate through, killing Thornton. John Selchick, Shaft Mine No. 34, was going to do some work in the shaft and it is thought that he supposed the cage was at the same place where he had left it only a few minutes before, but instead it had been lowered about 5 feet, so that a gang of men could proceed with their work at the bottom of the shaft. On returning to the top of shaft Selchick stepped on what he supposed was the cage, but instead fell about 5 feet, when he struck the cage and then fell off the side to the bottom, a distance of 180 feet. Mr. Jenkins was employed as Mine Foreman, and was going through the mines accompanied by a small boy, and hearing the slate beginning to fall he jumped back, knocking the boy so far away that he escaped injury, but not far enough to save himself.
