Wm. Steisel, Thacker No. 2 Mine, was a trapper boy and had the habit of jumping on the mine cars. Had been frequently warned by the mine foreman and drivers to discontinue this habit. He was trapping on main entry between 13th and 14th left, in riding from 14th to 13th left tried to get off but slipped and fell and the front wheel of car crushed his leg. Was taken to the hospital at Welch, but died two days after the accident. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Tacket, Dave (American; 3 years exper; age 15; Single) July 12, 1906. Dave Tacket, Lick Fork Mine, was acting as brake- man on a trip of mine cars going down a small grade when the cars wrecked, knocked down a post allowing some slate to fall on the rear end of car which caught and killed him instantly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Lankford, Joseph (American; 15 years exper; age 50; Married; 5 Children) September 8, 1906. Joseph Lankford, Alma Mine, was shooting rock at working face of the 12th left heading. Not taking the necessary precaution proceeded to work at the face without examining the roof after making a shot which had loosened the slate and it fell on him, killing him instantly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hatfield, Major (American; 1 year exper; age 28; Married) September 11, 1906, died October 2, 1906. Major Hatfield, War Eagle Mine, was running a mine machine when slate fell and broke his back and three ribs. Was taken to the hospital at Welch where he died. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mounts, Mike (Bud) (American; 3 years exper; age 33; Married; 3 Children) November 16, 1906. Mike (Bud) Mounts, Glen Alum No. 2 Mine, was laying track for his brother, Noah, who was a contractor. "Bud" seems to have gone into some other part of the mine where he did not have any business and was killed by a fall of slate from the rib. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Crabtree, John (American; age 17; Single) December 8, 1906. John Crabtree, Cedar Mine, was working for Keenan Mounts as back hand, digging coal, when draw slate fell crushing his head and body, causing death. Crabtree was an experienced miner of some seven years, but neglected to prop or take down the slate that fell on him. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Rotch, Donny (Hungarian; 45 days exper; age 25; Single) January 16, 1907. Donny Rotch, Red Jacket Mine, was shoveling coal from the face of his room when slate fell on him, mashing his head and causing death. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Beasley, Robert (American; age 28; Married; 3 Children) April 10, 1907. Robt. Beasley, Glen Alum Mine No. 1, was track layer and timberman. While in room No. 27 on 19th entry was caught by a fall of slate, causing instant death. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Smilenie, Hendri (Slavish; age 60; Married; 1 Child) June 21, 1907. Hendri Smilenie, Grapevine Mine, had just fired a shot and returned to the lace of the room to resume loading a car. The place was smokey and he failed to examine the top.
