Amelio Charna, Toney Gott and Sam Moat, Mill Creek Mine, were working on slate force when a fall of coal and slate from side and top of mine came without warning, falling on the men, causing in- stant death. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Shepherd, J. R. (American; 2 years exper; age 22; Single) July 23, 1906, died August 8, 1906. J. R. Shepherd, Pinnacle Mine, after firing a shot in the coal did not take the necessary precaution by examining the roof and taking down the loose slate, consequently was caught by a fall of slate, mashing him, causing death. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hairston, Charles (Negro; 6 years exper; age 24; Single) November 16, 1906. Charles Hairston, Coaldale Mine. A sudden fall of coal and slate knocked down a prop which struck Hairston, who walked out of the mine to his boarding house without any assistance, apparently not seriously hurt. The physician saw him a few hours afterwards, but the man did not complain of his head, only some pain in shoulder. It is presumed that he came to his death from intracranial hemorrhage about 14 hours after the accident. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Miller, Joe (Negro; Married) December 4, 1906. Joe Miller, Pawama Mine, was working in 2nd break- through in No. 9 room. The breakthrough only lacked about one car of being completed. He was working under draw slate which was cut off on three sides. When found he was lying beneath a piece of slate, had apparently been killed instantly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Muse, George (Negro; 2-1/2 years exper; age 16; Single) January 8, 1907. George Muse, Caswell Creek Mine, was caught by a fall of slate from brow of rib and crushed so badly that he died from the effects. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Elliott, Arthur (Negro; 8 months exper; age 22; Single; $50 Insurance) January 10, 1907. Arthur Elliott, Louisville Mine, fired a shot about 4:15 P. M. and evidently did not investigate the top before commencing to load his car, being in a great hurry to load up and get out before the mine closed for the day, and was caught by a fall of slate, killing him. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Lyle, Sam G. (American; 12 years exper; age 33; Married; 4 Children; $50 Ins.) January 15, 1907. Sam. G. Lyle, Booth-Bowen Mine, was working with J. W. Cheatwood on pillar between No. 15 and No. 16 rooms, on Meadows entry. After breaking through a stump on the pillar they set a prop in the center of opening. When they went in to work the slate had broken in two on the right side of the prop. This slate they pulled down and had just cleaned it up. Lyle bored a hole on left side and the shot was fired. They both got their picks and went to the place where shot was fired, Lyle made one stroke with his pick and the coal gave way and a piece of slate from the top fell on him, killing him instantly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Maals, Harvey (American; 2 years exper; age 17; Single; $50 Insurance) Taylor, George (American; age 35; Married; 1 Child) June 15, 1907. Harvey Maals and George Taylor, Weyanoke Mine, in company with several other workmen were employed in straightening track on main entry 75 feet from mouth of 1st right entry. Six little pop holes were put in along the rib 18 inches deep to shear it, four holes were fired. Foreman and some of the men returned to see results and fire the other two holes. The holes were lighted and Foreman yelled, "Fire", and turned back, only went a few feet when rock fell on Maals and Tay- lor. Foreman jerked the squibs out of the two holes and they were nor exploded.
