Martin Marcen, Shawnee Mine, had made an under-cut and put in a shot in the top coal which failed to bring it all down. He started to load a dar and while so doing the rest of the top coal came down and caught him. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Carroll, George (American; 9-yrs exp; age 32; Married; 3-children) July 10, 1901. George Carroll, Algoma Mine, was standing in No. 2 heading while work was being done on the break-through between No. 2 and No. 3 headings. A shot which was put in on the No. 3 heading came through and Carrol was struck by a piece of the roal Injuring him so that he died shortly afterwards. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Parry, William (Afro-Am; 15-yrs exp; age 45; Single) July 17, 1901. William Parry, Ashland Mine, was riding out on trip of mine cars and was on the rear car. The trip broke in two while going up a steep grade and the rear cars started back down the grade. Parry attempted to get off and was run over and instantly killed. Parry had no business on the trip as it is against the rules of the Company for any one to ride out on the trips except those whose business it is to take them out. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Green, John (Afro-Am; 1-week exp; age 25; Married; $50.00 Insurance) Aug 19, 1901. John Green, Pulaski Mine, was struck by a kettle-bottom which fell from the roof of the room in which he was working. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dent, Andrew (Afro-Am; 10-yrs exp; age 38; Married; $125.00 Insurance) Aug. 21, 1901. Andrew Dent, Algoma Mine, was struck by a piece of falling slate while working in his room. He had been advised to set a prop and failed to do so. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Herman, Arthur (German; 1-yr exp; age 40; Single) Aug. 23, 1901. Arthur Herman, Big Sandy Mine, was caught by falling slate and killed. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Reynolds, Oscar (Afro-Am; 1-1/2 yrs exp; age 19; Spragger; Single) Sept. 21, 1901. Oscar Reynolds, Turkey Gap Mine, was running down a trip of cars and attempted to get off when his clothing caught in the brake lever. He was thrown under the wheels and run over. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Watkins, John (Afro-Am; 3-yrs exp; age 24; Single) Oct. 3, 1901. John Watkins, Turkey Gap Mine, was killed by a fall of slate while working near the face of his room. If he had pulled down the draw slate according to the rules of the Company, the accident would not have occurred. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Goins, S. A. (American; 8-yrs exp; age 35; Married; 1-child) Nov. 1, 1901. S. A. Goins, Keystone Mine, was loading a car at the face of his room when a kettle-bottom fell on him without giving any warning. The place was timbered close up to where he was working. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Cleia, Steve (Hungarian; 2-mos exp; age 23; Single) Nov. 1, 1901. Steve Cleia, Powhatan Mine, was engaged in robbing a pillar and was working on the end of the stump and while pulling down some coal a kettle-bottom fell on him, killing him instantly. He had been warned not to work on the end of the stump. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Cox, George (Afro-Am; age 2-yrs; age 65; Married; $50.00 Insurance) Nov. 7, 1901. George Cox, Elk Ridge Mine, was engaged in cutting through an entry pillar and was working under a piece of slate which extended over on the entry, when the same fell and caught him. He had sounded it with his pick before going to work under it and thought it was safe. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Green, Clayborn B. (Afro-Am; 10-yrs exp; age 33; Married; $125.00 Insurance) Dec. 7, 1901. Clayborn B. Green. Algoma Mine (McKinney), was caught by a fall of top slate and killed. No details accompanied this report. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Page, Isaac (Afro-Am; 4-yrs exp; age 24; Driver; Single; $50.00 Insurance) Dec. 18, 1901. Isaac Page, Algoma Mine, was helping unload some props from a car when he broke his oil bottle In his pocket. The man who was working with him took the bottle out of his pocket and poured what oil was left into his lamp. Page then turned his pocket inside out and set fire to it with his lamp. His partner put it out, but he again set fire to it. This time he could not put it out. His partner, after trying un- successfully to pull his clothes off, ran down the entry for help. When he got back he found that all the clothing had burned off Page except his shoes and gloves. The burns sustained proved fatal. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Powell, W. F. (American; 10-yrs exp; age 30; Single) Jan. 3, 1902. W. F. Powell. Upland Mine, while pulling down loose coal in his room, was crushed by a lump falling from the top. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Roy, John (Afro-Am; 30-days exp; age 22; Door boy; Single) Jan. 6, 1902. John Roy, Powhatan Mine, was employed to attend door at drift mouth of No. 2 Mine. An empty trip was coming inside, but he did not get the door open in time and was crushed between the door and cars. His death was the result of his carelessness, as he could see the empty trip for half a mile. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Meadows, Charles (Afro-Am; 4-yrs exp; age 26; Married; $50.00 Insurance) Jan. 14, 1902. Charles Meadows, Lynchburg Mine, was caught by a fall of wing slate while turning a place off of No. 1 entry. He was cautioned by the foreman of the slate gang that the place was not safe. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hubbard, George (Afro-Am; 5-yrs exp; age 21; Driver; Single) Jan. 14, 1902. George Hubbard, Upland No. 2 Mine, was making up a trip and was bringing a car out of No. 19 room. He was driving too fast and in making a curve scraped a timber causing slate to fall and killed both the man and his mule. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Edwards, Richard S. (American; 11-mos exp; age 23; Single) Feb. 17, 1902. Richard S. Edwards, Peerless Mine, was making an un- der-cut, when coal came down catching him. The block of coal must have been loosened by a shot prior to starting the cut. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Crenshaw, Claud (Afro-Am; 11-mos exp; age 23; Single) Feb. 21, 1902. Claud Crenshaw, Peerless Mine, was caught by a piece of slate while in the act of loading a car. The slate was not properly sup- ported. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - McMillan, James A. (American; 3-yrs exp; age 24; Married; 1-child) Feb. 24, 1902. James A. McMillan, Turkey Gap Mine, had fired a shot and went back to the face when he was caught by a piece of falling slate. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Haskins, Horace (Afro-Am; age 26; Single) April 7, 1902. Horace Haskins, Crozer No. 2 Mine, was working on a pillar and was told to set a prop before loading his second car. He saicf he would finish the car first, but slate fell before he had completed loading the car, killing him instantly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Chambers, Caesar (Afro-Am; 4-yrs exp; age 28; Married) April 24, 1902. Caesar Chambers, Empire Mine, was killed by a falling kettle-bottom. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Smith, H. C. (American; 15-yrs exp; Married) May 6, 1902. H. C. Smith, McDowell Mine, was working in No. 1 entry when a kettle-bottom fell on him, killing him instantly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Collins, Henry (American; 1-mo exp; age 16; Driver & sw.by; Single) May 7, 1902. Henry Collins, Short Creek Mine, was riding on the front end of a mine car which jumped the switch to the slate dump. He stepped off in front of a car and was run over before the driver could stop the car. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Carter, Richard (Afro-Am; 13-days exp; age 12; Door boy) May 13, 1902. Richard Carter, Shamokin Mine, was run over by a trip of cars.
