Watson born: January 8, 1859 died: August 2, 1926 ---------------------------------------------------------------- James E. Watson Dead at Fairmont __ Had Been Identified With Coal Industry Since Early Manhood--- Brother of former Senator C. W. Watson Fairmont, WVa, Aug 2 James Edwin Watson, aged sixty-seven years, identified with the coal industrys of the Fairmont district since his early manhood, died here tonight at 10:25 o'clock at his home "High Gate" after an illness of more than two weeks. He began his career in the coal industry with his father, the late James Otis Watson, who opened up the coal regions of this territory. More than forty years ago Mr. Watson took charge of the J. O. Watson Coal interests which embraced practically all of the coal operations in this region. He organized various companies and was at the head of the corporations until his health failed in the year 1899. Later when the Consolidation Coal Co., was formed from the allied corporations he retained his interests and was active until near the end of his life. He was organizer of the Old Bank of Fairmont and President of the concern for many years, also retained the presidency when the National Bank was formed, holding this office until a year ago. Mr. Watson engaged extensively in the real estate business and owned many valuable properties about Fairmont. He married Miss Mattie Moderwell, of Chicago, who survives him, also two sons, James Edwin Watson, Jr., and Bobby Watson, and one daughter, Mrs. George Stockly, of New York. Two children are deceased. Two brothers survive, Sylvania (sic) L., and Clarence W. Watson, the latter being the former United States Senator from West Virginia, also president of the Consolidation Coal Co. There are three sisters. The funeral will take place Wednesday evening with services at 5 o'clock at the family home. Watson belonged to the Christ Episcopal Church here. He was a Democrat and formerly active leader of his party. For many years Mr. Watson had been invalid but was active in business affairs.
