Marion County, Pages 146-148 Yannish, Jacob July 8, 1903. Jacob Yannish, Monongah No. 3 Mine, had fired a shot which knocked some coal down and loosened some more. "While he was loading the coal which fell and had gotten close up under the loose coal, which he had neglected to take down, it fell on him. killing him instantly. Stiney Koslos, Monongah No. 3 Mine, with his partner had taken down the roof coal and were re-timbering the slate when a piece of slate, weighing possibly 1,000 lbs., fell between props, catching him. Yeager, Gaston Mine, was working under some slate which he had tried to pull down when it fell on him, causing an injury on top of head, which affected spinal cord. When he found that he could pull down the slate he should have timbered it. Seaton, West Fairmont Shaft Mine, was loading coal after a machine when a pot of slate fell from the roof, about 8 feet from the face of the working place, catching him. The place had been examined and was considered safe. Sept. 26, 1903. John C. Riggins, Mine Boss at the Pennois Mine, was having the pillars drawn and was giving the work his personal attention as he considered the place unsafe. He went into this working place a short time before he was killed and had the driver take out the loaded car in order that it might be clear of a fall. A small block of coal had been left standing and Riggins struck it several times with a pick, when it gave way allowing the slate lying on it to fall on him. Toney Wells, West Fairmont Shaft Mine, had fired a shot and was loading a car when a pot of slate, weighing about 2 tons, fell on him. If he had sounded the roof and found it was dangerous and had used the timber at hand for that purpose the accident would have been prevented. John Moot, Monongah No. 6 Mine, was loading a car and working directly under a pot in roof when the pot of slate fell, striking him across the back. Had he sounded the roof after shooting the coal he would have discovered the pot in roof was loose and could have propped it. They were making a cut through to start the rib back. The pillars on the next heading had been drawn, which caused a squeeze on these ribs. They were mining a shot and mined back to squeeze crack, when the mining fell out, mashing Yonsco through head and shoulders. His partner was not injured. Sam Hughes, Pennois Mine, was mining when he was caught by a fall of draw slate. He said after the accident that he had sounded the roof and that it appeared solid, but that he did not place any timber under a piece of projecting slate and after he had mined about two hours it fell on him,, causing injuries from the effects of which he died. James Audia, New England Mine, was trying to get on a trip of loaded cars to ride out when he fell under the cars, several of the cars running over him before the trip could be stopped. Harry Haddix, Gaston Mine, was taking a mine car into a room, when his mule left the track, going between the props. The car was thrown, around, knocking out a prop and causing a fall of slate, which caught Haddix on the head and chest, killing him instantly. Carlman Cza, Chiefton Mine, was at work when a miner in an adjoining heading put off two shots, which blew through into Cza's heading, throwing coal against him. Cza had been notified to get out of the way, but had refused to get a safe distance away from the shot. George Sappo, Murray Mine, was drawing a pillar; had left his regular working place and gone around behind it. No one knows what he was doing there, but while there, which was only a short time, about a ton of roof coal fell, striking him on the head and face, killing him instantly. There is no known reason for his being in the place where the accident occurred. John Penney, Chiefton Mine, had put off a shot and loaded one car, he then went up to the coal to pull it down with his pick, when it gave way suddenly and fell, catching him before he could get out of the way. Salvatore Eates, Monongah No. 6 Mine, was killed by a fall of draw slate. At the time of this accident the machine men had just finished making an under-cut and were moving the machine away when the injured man stepped in behind the machine! A pot of slate, which was directly over the machine while the machine men were making the cut, fell on him. One of the machine men had sounded the roof and thought it was safe. The empty car not being far enough in the room was struck by trip and pushed farther into the room, catching him between car and rib.
