Joseph Smidt, Murray Mine, was caught by a fall of slate and head coal in cutting off stump of coal and almost instantly killed. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Kowalski, Julian (Pole; 2-mos exp; age 35; Married) Aug. 20, 1901. Julian Kowalski, Monongah No. 3 Mine, was killed by a fall of slate at the face of his room. The piece of slate which fell had projected beyond the cap piece on the props and should have either been taken down or posted. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ross, John (Italian; 1-yr exp; age 33; Married) Oct. 11, 1901. John Ross, New England Mine, was smothered to death. The coal was set on fire from a shot and Ross was unable to make his way out through the heat and smoke. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Clayton, Bruce (American; 5-yrs exp; age 60; Married) Nov. 8, 1901. Bruce Clayton, West Fairmont Shaft Mine, had charged a hole for a shot and was tamping the powder when it exploded prema- turely. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Adamwich, John (Slav; 4-mos exp; age 53; Laborer; Married; 6-children) Jan. 13, 1902. John Adamwich, Monongah No. 2 Mine, was working on track when loaded trip came down heading and knocked him down, the first car passing over his body and second car stopping on his body, killing him instantly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fesler, Thomas E. (Amerian; 4-yrs exp; age 32; Married; 3-children) Feb. 4, 1902. Thomas E. Fesler, New England Mine, was caught by a fall of draw slate as he was in the act of setting mine machine. The two men who were working with him sprang aside and escaped injury, Fesler failed to jump when warned that the slate was coming down. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Leonard, James (American; 5-yrs exxp; age 20; Driver; Single) Feb. 23, 1902. James Leonard, Monongah No. 2 Mine, was sitting on front of truck used to haul rails into the mine. The horse ran away and started toward the stable, jerking front truck from track. Leonard either jumping or being thrown from it at the same time it left the track, rear truck striking him in breast, breaking breastbone. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pyles, C. C. (American; 7 or 8 y. exp; age 50; Married) Feb. 26, 1902, died, March 3, 1902. C. C. Pyles, Monongah No. 5 Mine, was killed by slate falling from roof into mine car and rolling off mine car on to him. The man working with him warned him that the slate was slipping, but Pyles took no notice of the warning. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mikalozeski, Winslow (Pole; 38-dys exp; age 27; Single) March 18, 1902, died March 19, 1902. Winslow Mikalozeski, Monongah No. 3 Mine, was working with his partner timbering a place 18 feet wide, getting ready to draw a pillar when the slate fell striking him on foot and knocking him against ar lump of coal. He had been warned to be very careful as the slate was dangerous. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Kincade, A. E. (American; 2-yrs exp; age 27; Driver; Married) April 7, 1902. A. E. Kincade, Murray Mine, was walking along beside his trip when car turned in air course switch, catching him between car and rib. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Leon, Charles (Italian; 4-yrs exp; age 35; Married) April 22, 1902. Charles Leon, Monongah No. 2 Mine, was lying on his side working in a cross-cut when a piece of slate fell from the roof strik- ing him on the side above the hips. He knew that the slate was loose and should have taken it down. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Litavits, John (Slavish; 3-mos exp; age 41; Single) May 17, 1902. John Litavits, Murray Mine, was crushed to death by a fall of slate, which gave way without warning while he was engaged in cleaning out a previous fall. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Rife, Tony (Slavish; 6-mos exp; age 28; Single) May 17, 1902. Tony Rife, Murray Mine, was crushed to death by a fall of slate, which gave way without warning while he was engaged in clean- ing away a previous fall. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Byard, James (American; 3-mos exp; age 25; Driver; Single) June 16, 1902. James Byard, Monongah No. 6 Mine, was between two cars with brakes set on front car when trapper flagged him. He went to jump off with his lamp out and was caught between the rib and car. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Warehoff, Andy (Slav; 6-mos exp; age 21; Married; 2-children) June 17, 1902.
