Hardesty & Company Publishers, 1883 JOHN B. CRANE -- was elected to the office of recorder of Marion county in 1863, continued in the office until 1865, was re-elected in 1869, and again in 1871. He served until January 1, 1873, when the office was changed to clerk of the county court, and he was elected to fill it, since which time he has been, and still is, the efficient incumbent. He was a son of John and Nancy (Dunham) Crane, both now deceased, and was born in Preston county, Virginia (now West Virginia), January 5, 1840. He has been a resident in Marion county since 1859, and in this county was married November 28, 1867. His wife is Mary E., daughter of Matthew and Eliza Fleming, both now deceased. Her birth was in this county, where her parents were many years honored residents. In the years of the civil war, John B. Crane served with the 17th West Virginia Infantry as quartermaster's sergeant during their term of service.
