BARNS was one of the members of the convention that reorganized the State government of Virginia in 1861. He was born October 21, 1816, at Barnsville, near Fairmont, Marion county. His early life was spent in a grist-mill, sawmill and country store, with very little opportunity to attend the village school, and his principal occupation in subsequent life has been the manufacturing of yarns and woolen goods, and the milling of flour. Integrity and common sense won the hearts of his neighbors and the voters through the county, who sent him to Richmond to represent them in the Assembly, sessions of 1853-4 and 1855-6. He sided with the West in a desire for a separate statehood, and against secession, and was a member of the Wheeling convention. He afterwards served two sessions in the West Virginia House of Delegates, 1863 and 1865. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Additional Information: --------------------------------------------------------------------- Death Register, Marion County WV, 1895, page 388, line 385 BARNS, John S. died Dec. 2, 1895 at age 84 Birthplace: Barnesville Occupation: Miller Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery --------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriage Register, Marion County WV, 1858, Page 14, Line 6 John S.
