Page 468 ULYSSES NEAR ARNETT Near Rivesville, Marion county, Virginia, lived Jonathan Arnett and his wife, Elizabeth. There was born, upon a stock farm, November 7, 1820, their son, Ulysses Near, who, in 1877, presided over the Senate of his native State. His education was obtained from the common schools. From 1857 to 1859 he represented Marion county in the General Assembly of Virginia. He was a member of the Convention of 1872 to revise the State Constitution, and served in the Senate from 1874 to 1877, in the latter year as President.
