John Barker, Morris Creek Mine, was working in his room in the mine when a large piece of draw slate fell on him. Had been previously warned about the danger by the mine foreman, the day before the accident, but neglected to secure the place. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Van Hess, John (German; 1 year exper; age 35; Married; 3 Children) July 8, 1906. John Van Hess, North Carbon Mine, in company with an- other man went into shoot place, lighting two holes, only one of which went off, he returned to place just as the second shot went off, killing him instantly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hodge, Frank M. (American; 25 yrs exper; age 44; Married; 7 Children) July 9, 1906. Frank M. Hodge, Dry Branch Mine No. 2, was in the act of setting a post in room when a fall of slate came, striking him on the head. His son was with him when the accident occurred. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Meadows, C. C. (Negro; 8 yrs exper; age 28; Married; 2 Children) August 25, 1906. C. C. Meadows, Red Warrior Mine, was working at the face of room along with two or three other men when they heard the slate working, Meadows ran about 20 feet and was caught under the fall of slate and killed. Had he remained with the other men at the face he would not have been injured. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Toney, Simon E. (American; 12 yrs exper; age 34; Married; 2 Children) September 5, 1906, died October 2, 1906. Simon E. Toney, Butler Mine, had his back broken by a fall of slate from the effects of which he after- wards died. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mullins, H. H. (American; 36 yrs exper; age 49; Married; 9 Dependents) September 12, 1906. H. H. Mullins, Shamrock Mine, in entering the room with his son after shooting the coal found the top loose on the right side but did not think it so dangerous but what they could load the car out before it would fall. It fell sooner than he expected and caught him under it. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Scott, Robert (American; 15 yrs exper; age 30; Married) October 26, 1906. Robert Scott, Red Warrior Mine, working as motor man was hauling a trip of loaded cars on main entry at a high speed when an automatic trap door failed to open which caused a wreckage of the trap door, was struck on the head with some of the wreckage, crush- ing his skull. After being carried a short distance on the motor he fell off and either the motor or mine cars ran over him. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Brown, Charles (American; age 30; Married) December 6, 1906. Charles Brown, Imperial No. 3 Mine, was killed by a fall of slate in entry. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thomas, William (American; 4 months exper; age 28; Single) December 17, 1906. Wm. Thomas, Kayford Mine, was standing three or four hundred feet from his working place beside a car the driver was trying to replace on the track. The car struck a post which caused some slate to fall on Thomas, fracturing his spinal column from the effects of which he died the latter part of March, 1907. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Cheatham, Charles A. (Negro; one year exper; age 30; Single; $50 Insurance) January 12, 1907. Chas. A. Cheatham, West Virginia Mine No. 1, was working with J. H. Harris, a coal loader. The roof was examined about two hours before the accident by the mine boss, superintendent. Harris and Cheatham, and some bad slate was found. The superintendent told Harris the roof was bad and instructed him to set posts. One had been set when a "kettle bottom" they had not noticed before fell, catching Cheatham, causing instant death. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Botts, John M. (American; 10 yrs exper; age 33; Married; 5 Children) February 7, 1907. John M. Botts, Coalburg Mine, was a machine runner and in moving an electric chain machine into a room the bitts on front caught on mine post in making a turn, knocking it down causing" a piece of slate to come down covering the man, the machine and the mule. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jones, Love (Negro; 3 yrs exper; ae 23; Single) February 7, 1907. Love Jones, Monarch Mine, neglected to set some posts which were ready for use and a large piece of draw slate fell, breaking his neck. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Casebolt, Wellington (4 yrs exper; age 25; Married; 2 Children) March 18, 1907, died March 21, 1907. Wellington Casebolt, Monarch Mine, while acting as motorman going in the mines, running very fast, collided with two empty cars standing on the main line causing the cars to pile up, catching and squeezing him. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Vanhoose, Vernie (American; age 22; Married; 2 Children) April 8, 1907. Vernie Vanhoose, South Carbon Mine, was loading machine coal and had place about cleaned up, when about two inches of draw slate fell, killing him instantly. He had been instructed by the mine foreman before the accident to timber the room, and there were five posts in the room for the purpose. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hubbard, Jacob (American; age 40; Single) April 19, 1907. Jacob Hubbard, West Virginia No. 1 Mine, was load- ing coal and died from internal bleeding caused by, or resulting from, straining an old gun shot wound. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Perry, Albert (American; age 18; Single) May 17, 1907. Albert Perry, La Mont No. 3 Mine, was working with the contractor under heavy draw slate with posts set near the face, in middle of entry. The slate broke around the posts, falling and strik- ing his head, killing him instantly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (name not known) (Italian, age 35; Married) May 27, 1907. Italian No. 14 (name not known), Holley & Stephenson No. 5 Mine, was making preparations to shoot down his coal when a piece of slate near the face fell on him, resulting in death. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - McDowell, Will (American; age 25; Single) May 29, 1907. Will McDowell, Black Band No. 1 Mine, while acting as driver hauling a loaded car from face of 2nd right heading to parting. Failing to show up in reasonable time search was made and he was found doubled up under front end of car. Lamp was found about 20 feet back, supposition is that his lamp was knocked off and in trying to stop or get off car while riding on the front end, lost his footing or fell off, knocked down and run over. He had a weak heart and it may be that he had a fainting spell and fell off. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hayes, Elmer (American; 2 yrs exper; age 26; Married; 2 Children) June 4, 1907. Elmer Hayes, Lucas Ray Mine, while at work shoveling coal immediately after firing a shot a fall of slate came, breaking his neck. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Bias, Ernese (American; age 21; Single) Neal, Ellis (American; age 15; Single) June 25, 1907. Ernest Bias & Ellis Neal, Ruby Mine, were on the tip- ple eating lunch and talking to the weigh boss, Wm. Large. Large told Bias to see if the trip was ready. As he started Neal shouted "lookout," and just then one of the run-away cars struck Bias and Neal and car- ried them through the end of tipple to ground, killing them instantly. The chain used to ease the loaded cars over the knuckle at the top of the Incline broke, causing the cars to come against the incline rope with a jerk which made the coupling pin jump out thus allowing the cars to run wild down the incline. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - James, Reuben (Negro; age 27; Married) June 25, 1907. Reuben James, Kayford Mine, was helping Bradley Braxton on an electric chain machine cutting a room.
