Owen Thomas, Joshua =============================================================================== FATAL ACCIDENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 1902 KANAWHA COUNTY (Page 104) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Cooper, Clyde (American; 4-yrs exp; age 18; Motorman; Single) Paden, Albert W. (American; 2-yrs exp; age 36; Electrician; Married; 3-children) Sept. 17, 1901. Clyde Cooper and Albert W. Paden, Acme Mine, were on the motor bringing out a loaded trip when it ran into a piece of slate which pushed ahead of the motor, knocking out a post and letting a piece of slate fall on top of the motor. When the motor struck the slate the men tried to get on top of the motor and were caught by the fall of slate. Paden lived about an hour after the accident and gave the above information. This mine was inspected the 13th of July, at which time the roof and the haulways was found in a dangerous condition in many places, and instructions given to the mine boss and superintendent to put haulways in safe condition. On a visit made the day after the acci- dent it was found that the Inspector's instructions had not been fully complied with. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - McGinnis, Oscar (American; age 17; Single) Nov. 7, 1901. Oscar McGinis, Cannelton Mine, was severely burned with powder and died several hours later. McGinis was not in the employ of the Company at the time of the accident, but was to go to work the fol- lowing morning. He was in the room where he was to work with his brother-in-law, when, by some means unknown, some powder in a keg ignited. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sword, A. Jackson (American; 25-yrs exp; age 45; Married; 5-children) Dec. 3, 1901. A. Jackson Sword, New Calderwood Mine, was caught by a fall of slate while engaged in loading a car at the face of the coal in his room. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sheapard, W. Owen (American; 10-yrs exp; age 37; Married; 5-children) Dec. 5, 1901. W. Owen Sheapard, Acme Mine, was struck on the head by a piece of coal while riding up the incline and died some hours later. He did not appear to be badly hurt at first, as he walked home. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thomas, Joshua Jan. 20, 1902, died March 8, 1902. Joshua Thomas, Mile Branch, Mine, was caught by falling slate which he and his helper neglected to make safe by setting posts.
