Perry NAME OF MINE: Pioneer No. 2 NATURE AND CAUSE OF ACCIDENT: Having knocked out a post from under a piece of slate on the entry, he walked under the slate (which he was warned by the mine boss not to do) to sound it. As he did so the slate fell on him breaking his back and also injuring him internally. Anderson NAME OF MINE: Pioneer No. 1 NATURE AND CAUSE OF ACCIDENT: (see the next report - for Jubal Carner) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fatal Accidents in the Kanawha District, 1883 Kanawha County, page 160 Carner, Jubal DATE OF ACCIDENT: October 5 DATE OF DEATH: October 5 NAME OF PERSON: Jubal Carner NAME OF MINE: Pioneer No. 1 NATURE AND CAUSE OF ACCIDENT: These two men were given a room to turn, but were ordered by the mine boss not to begin work until the track men had taken down a loose piece of slate which was hanging directly over the place where room was to be turned. Disregarding orders, Anderson and Carner began turning the room before the slate had been taken down. In a short time a large piece of coal fell and the slate with it, on both men, mashing Carner's head and breaking Anderson's neck.
