He was educated at William & Mary College and took an early and prominent part in public affairs. He was a member of the House of Burgesses of Virginia in 1764 and again a member and speaker in 1777. Was a member of the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1777 and in that capacity in 1776 voted for and signed the Declaration of Independence. Was Governor of Virginia from November 1781 to November 1784 and was chosen Governor in 1791 but died before his term of service commenced. Two of his descendants have been Presidents of the United States.
