He was a native of one of the New England States, but possessed but few of the characteristics of that steady arid cool headed people. Striking and intellectual in his physiognomy, he labored under the same deformity in one of his feet that tortured the soul of Lord Byron during his life. In many respects the temper and character of the two men were not unlike. Fiery and intractable in his temper, constantly laboring under the suspicion that his club foot was an object of observation, his extreme sensitiveness especially in society, generated the most painful feelings in those around him. And yet, when he could forget his deformity, he was replete with wit, vivacity and good humor. He was a profound scholar, and did ample justice to the youths whose education was entrusted to him. He died in 1834. ------------------------------------------------------------------- If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access other biographies for Berkeley County, WV by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/wv/berkeley/bios.html -------------------------------------------------------------------
