           CAPTAIN HERBERT JOHN NELSON, who sailed the
         great lakes for thirty-six years, died yester-
         day at his home in West Allys, a suburb of
         Milwaukee, after a lingering illness from
         tuberculosis. He was 59 years old.
           While in command of the steamer Marion about
         five years ago on a trip across Lake Michigan
         a terrific storm arose, and CAPTAIN NELSON
         stood at the wheel for three days and nights,
         finally taking his vessel safely into Chicago.
         His health declined from that time.
