SAM. NEFF Passes Away. CAPT. SAMUEL NEFF, a lake captain and vessel owner died on Sunday afternoon at his residence in Milwaukee, aged 62 years. The direct cause of death was a sudden attack of pneumonia, following a severe cold of a week's standing. The deceased was buried at Oshkosh Thursday. CAPT. NEFF was born on March 31, 1842, in New York state. When he was 9 years of age his parents came to Wisconsin and settled at Oshkosh. When SAMUEL NEFF was 12 years old he shipped on a lake schooner and at 15 years he was master of a little freight hooker plying on Lake Winnebago. At the age of 20 he gave up sailing vessels and began steamboating on the Mississippi river, where he remained until 1871, when he returned to the lakes as a captain and owner of a steamer. During his life on the lakes, CAPT. NEFF owned, in all, some thirty or forty different craft. At one time he had seven vessels under his immediate control. He continued as commander until about five years ago, when he retired to give all his attention to the shore interests of his business. He built a number of vessels, some of them at his own shipyard at Oshkosh, and others at the Manitowoc yards and at Port Huron. There are three steamers still that run under his ownership, the Charles Neff, the Lucy Neff and the Adella Shores. About a year ago he sold the Nebraska, the Marion, the Kelton and the Hale. ========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ==========================================================================
