John Massey, vet- eran master of steamers, known all over the great lakes, and who at the age of 19 years was captain of the Penfield, was held from the residence, 864 Ninth street, at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon under the auspices of the Shipmasters' association, Milwaukee branch No. 6. Services took place at St. James' Episcopal church. Interment was in Union Cemetery. The pallbearers, selected from the Ship- masters' association were Capts. John Moody, F. A. Dority, Joseph Brownell, O. J. Soleau, D. C. Sullivan and Martin Walle. Among the floral tributes was one from the Chicago branch of the Shipmasters' association. It was designed in the form of the pennant of the association with Capt. Massey's number, 749, in the center. The Milwaukee lodge also sent a char- acteristic design. Capt. Massey, who came from a family of seafaring men, died of pneumonia on Sunday. The funeral was held on Thurs- day to await the arrival of relatives from Cleveland, Duluth, Ogdensburg, N. Y., and upper Wisconsin. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and four daughters: Capt. Chester A., Floyd, Florence, Olive, Ruth and Ethel. Capt. Massey was born in Alexander Bay, N. Y. He was captain of the schoon- ers Penfield, Frank Cole, E. A. Vickery, Thomas L. Parker. His first steamer was the Josephine. He was also master of the steamer Arthur Orr. The steamers William R. Linn, William L. Brown and G. Watson French were brought out by him. ===========================================================================
