Milwaukee, Sept. 21 - (AP) - CHARLES H. HUBBARD, 70-year-old retired superintendent of the Milwaukee lighthouse district and Great Lakes captain, died yesterday following an operation several days ago. During his 44 years in the United States lighthouse service, almost 18 of them as head of the twelfth district, CAPTAIN HUBBARD saw many a maritime evolution. A native of Toledo, Ohio, he retired last Feb. 1. He became ill recently while on a leisurely lake cruise after inspect- ing a new lighthouse tender being built at Bay City, Mich., to replace the Sumac which he had commanded from 1903 to 1918. Leaving school at 16 to go to sea, CAPTAIN HUBBARD rose rapidly to quarter- master and at 20 years of age became the youngest commissioned captain on the Great Lakes. In 1892, he gave up commercial sailing and captaincy of a passenger boat to enter the government service. CAPTAIN HUBBARD enjoyed telling about the steam-driven fog-horns of the old days and how frequently it took 30 to 60 minutes to get up steam to run them. Through the years he saw the old type fog horn supplanted by those sounded by compressed air and later by the electrically driven horns in use to- day and the more modern radio beacons. On May 1, 1918, CAPTAIN HUBBARD was ap- pointed head of the twelfth district with headquarters at Milwaukee. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
