Peter M. Cartwright, 59 grand president of the International Shipmasters' Association of the Great Lakes and a commander on the lakes for 20 years, died at 9 p.m. Thurs- day at Milwaukee hospital after an illness of six weeks. He under- went an operation at the hospital on Nov. 3. Capt. Cartwright was born in Algo- nac, Mich. His father had sailed the Great Lakes for years and as a boy Peter spent many months around shipping docks. At 14 the youth be- came a deckhand and junior officer on one of the sailing vessels of the nineties. COMMANDED LAKE STEAMER After steam vessels came into use on the lakes Capt. Cartwright joined the Pickands, Mather & Co., Cleveland, Ohio, in 1902. He first commanded the steamer Hemlock in 1910. He was with the Cleveland steamship concern for 28 years. For the last four years Capt. Cart- wright was in charge of the 8151 gross ton freighter Col. James Pick- ands. Before becoming grand president, Capt. Cartwright was active in the affairs of the International Ship- masters' association for many years. The association has 14 lodges. Capt. Cartwright was a member of Milwaukee lodge No. 6, formed in 1891. Capt. Cartwright was president of the Milwaukee lodge before being elected grand president in 1928. He was re-elected grand president again in 1929 and 1930. ACTIVE IN LODGES Capt. Cartwright was a member of Excelsior Masonic lodge, S. Twenty- fifth st. and W. National av., Excel- sior chapter, Royal Arch Masons, and Galilee commandery Knights Templar. He was a member of Wisconsin council No. 1, and of Tripoli shrine. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Emilie Cartwright, two sons, Peter, jr., a graduate of Marquette university and an electrical engineer in Milwaukee, and James; and five sisters, Mrs. Ed- ward Richardson and Mrs. Edward Riggs, both of Port Huron, Mich., and Mrs. Sadie Williams, Mrs. Phillip Reilly and Mrs. Edward Fabacher, all of New Orleans, La. The Cartwright home in Milwaukee is at 515 W. Fiftieth st. Funeral services will be held Mon- day afternoon at Excelsior lodge un- der the auspices of the Masons. Burial will be in Valhalla cemetery. Capt. Cartwright's body will be at the F. J. Borgwardt undertaking rooms, 1817 W. National av., until Monday morning. ===========================================================================
