CAPT. NATHAN W. KIRTLAND died in this city Tuesday afternoon of general debility after a lengthy illness. He was born in Connecticut in 1825, and has been a seafarer all his life. In 1863 he came to this county and located in Egg Harbor, and as soon as the Goodrich line was re-established between Chicago and Green Bay he commanded the steamer Backus, which was put on the route in the spring of 1866, after having received a general overhauling at the Bay during the preceding winter. The Backus was burned during the following winter, when the company put the old propeller Ottawa on the route, this craft being in charge of CAPTAIN KIRTLAND also. He sailed on various other boats of the line for a few years afterward, when he became the owner of a small schooner which was placed in the coast- wise trade, a business that he followed until the in- firmities of advanced age compelled him to retire from the water a few years ago. in 1872 CAPTAIN KIRTLAND was wedded to MISS EFFIE McKINLEY, of Ohio, who, by the way, is a first cousin to PRESIDENT McKINLEY. This union resulted in the birth of one son, FREDERICK, who with his mother survives. The remains were taken to Egg Harbor and interred in the town cemetery Thursday morning, the obsequies being largely attended by the friends and former neighbors. CAPTAIN KIRTLAND was a typical New Englander, who left his impress on the community in which he dwelt. He was withal honest and true to his family and friends, and the man has yet to appear who can truth- fully say that CAPTAIN KIRTLAND ever knowing wronged or defrauded him. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
