Sturgeon Bay, Wis. - Funeral Services were held from the Moravian church here Tuesday for CAPT. FRANK JACOBS, 76, who was in command of tugs during the building of the Sturgeon Bay canal and then spent nearly 40 years tugging on the Chicago river and drainage canal. He retired about seven years ago. The captain was found dead in his bed Sunday at his home near Sawyer. CAPT. JACOBS, who was born in Germany, was placed in command of a craft here when only 19. He was the youngest captain on the lakes then and one of the best. Pioneer marine men still relate how, to prove the supremacy of the tug O. B. Green, he ran a thrilling race with the tug John Gregory here in the early eighties and won out when the latter gave up after almost blowing up her boilers. As hard boiled a man as ever had command of a boat, JACOBS had no use for religion in the early days, but at Chicago in 1898 he suddenly reformed as a result of chance attendance at the Moody church and since that time was an ardent church worker. Surviving are three brothers, THEODORE and BRUNO of Milwaukee and JOHN of Canada. ===========================================================================
