J. DEVINE DIES SUDDENLY Lake Vessle Master for 30 Years; Retired in 1922 CAPT. JOHN DEVINE, well-known resident of Sturgeon Bay, died suddenly at his home on N. Court st. Saturday, the result of a heart attack. He had been down to the business sec- tion of the city to do the shopping as was his usual custom, and returning home at about 11 a.m. he put away the groceries he had pur- chased and sat at a table to read. A short time later he was found dead by his brother, WILLIAM. JOHN DEVINE was 60 years of age at the time of his death. He was born in Kewaunee Nov. 2, 1878, son of the late JOHN and MARY DEVINE, and he came to Sturgeon Bay in the year 1899. At the age of 14 MR. DEVINE embarked upon a marine career, at which he continued until his retirement in 1922. Starting as an ordi- nary seaman he worked his way up until he se- cured his Master's license, adequate for navi- gating the Great Lakes and connecting waters. He sailed on various ships in the Goodrich Transit Line, and the West Ports Transporta- tion Co., and for some time was on the steamer Petoskey, passenger boat and general freighter, plying between Milwaukee, Grand Haven and Muskegon. He at one time owned and operated a sailing vessel with which he engaged in haul- ing lumber from Menominee, Mich., to Sturgeon Bay, and from Green Bay down the west shore of Lake Michigan. He had made his home in Sturgeon Bay continuously since retiring from marine lief 16 years ago. MR. DEVINE was never married. He is survived by two brothers, HENRY and WILLIAM H., both of Sturgeon Bay, and one sister, MISS ELLEN E. DEVINE of Oak Park, Ill. Last rites were held Tuesday morning from the Hahn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Father A. J. Koeferl officiating. Pallbearers were JOS. and NORMAN O'BOYLE, FERDINAND WIEGAND, JOHN McATEER, GEORGE MOE and BARNEY HITT. Interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery. Among those from a distance here to attend the last rites were MRS. MARY DOCKRY, MRS. B. H. BIE, and MRS. W. T. BIE, all of Green Bay. ===============================================================================
