In this town August 3rd, CHARLES C. BEARD, only son of U. L. C. and MARTHA H. BEARD, aged 7 years, 10 months and 4 days. Died at Sturgeon Bay, Aug. 8th, PETER SHERWOOD, one of the early settlers and Pioneers of Door County, aged 73 years. Died by Drowning at Sturgeon Bay, August 4th, C. H. HJORTH, aged 42 years. Death of a Door County Pioneer - We have this week to record the death of PETER SHERWOOD, Esq., one of the first settlers on Sturgeon Bay. He lived to the ripe old age, of over three score and ten years, much respected by all who knew him, he was moving about the house as usual only the day before his decease when finally death came upon him gradually, suffering no pain, and he passed away like one in a sweet slumber; at peace with himself and all the world. Mr. SHERWOOD came to Door county 25 years ago, when it was almost an unbroken forest, and settled on Sturgeon Bay, near where he died. He has lived to see the county grow until it attained a population of about 4000 inhabi- tants with towns springing up all over its surface, and farms carved out of its woods by the bone and sinew of a busy population - he was one of those sturdy - never give up sort of men, who like ourself, when he settled down in a new county was bound to stick to it, in the full con- sciousness that Door county had a destiny, and with in- dustry and persistance was bound some day to make herself known and be in the foremost rank. Our departed friend was not disappointed, - he lived to see his adopted county make some strides in his "latter days," and he died content, - peace to his ashes, - may we all profit by his example, and struggle on for the good of our county and our Country, and may our end be as peaceful and gentle as his was. ===========================================================================
