The ice is perfectly safe above and below it, but those crossing after dark and not aware of its existence run considerable risk of getting wet. Several have got into it during the past week, but fortunately in every instance help was promptly at hand. The little boys naturally fre- quent this dangerous spot in preference to the safe parts of the bay. On Monday last, a child of Mr. E. B. STEVENS, while playing near the crack with other children, got into the water, and would have drowned, but for the timel assistance of ROBERT GRAHAM, Esq. The squire was at work on our office roof at the time, fixing the stove pipe, and, see- ing the boys near the crack, gave a cry of warning. The next moment we heard his 'silvery footsteps' coming down from the roof on the double quick. We rushed to the door to see what was the matter, think- ing that the roof had slidden of (sic) with the squire, and we were just in time to see him coming off the ice with a very damp little boy in his arms. We may get into the ice ourself, some of these un- lucky days, but we shall feel perfectly safe, if we are only sure that Squire GRAHAM is within half a mile of us. There should be bushes placed along the creek to warn travellers, and we hope to see it done before being obliged to chronicle a case of drowning. ===========================================================================
