Washington is located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It shares an international border with the Canadian province of British Columbia to the north. It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, Oregon to the south and Idaho to the east. The Capital city is Olympia and Seattle is the largest city. Washington was admitted to the Union as the 42nd state on November 11, 1889. It is frequently referred to as Washington state to distinguish it from Washington, D.C.
