Van Schaick regiment in the New York line in the continental establishment and continued to **** as sergeant in said corps or in the service of the United States for the full period of one year and untill discharged at a place called at Albany in the State of New York that in the month of January 1777 he enlisted in Still Water in the State of New York - in a Comp'y commanded by Capt Mc Cuen in Col. Seth Warner's regiment being one of the 13th additional ***** ***** by Congress and on Continental establishment for the **** of during the War he continued to serve in said corps or in the service of the United States *** 1779 the **** **** he does not recollect when he received his Commission from the Congress as an Ensign he was then transfered to Captain Gideon Brownsen's Company in same regiment and served in the capacity of Ensign untill the month of January or February 1781 he was promoted to a Lieutenant and ordered with the ***** of the -------------------------------------------------------------------------- the ** Regiment (the same having been principally cut up at Fort George & taken prisoners) at head Quarters at New burgh State of New York & in the Month of March 1781 he was or he now believes discharged from the service as a L***** Officer by Gen'r George Washington Esq commander in chief on the ***** of half pay He was in the battles of Hubbardston, Bennington, Fort George & a number of skirmishes - that he was in reduced circumstances & stands in need of the assistance of the Country for support that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said service - that he delivered his Commission to Stephen ***** of Alburgh in Feb 1818 for the purpose of prooving **** which he thinks is now in the War Office. On this Elevanth day of July AD 1820 Personally appeared in open Court being the Supreme Court of said State for the County of Franklin and a Court of Records for said State and County having the Power of fine and im- prisonment Benoni Grant, aged sixty three years resident in Highgate in said county who being duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath declare that he served in the revolutionary war as follows I enlisted in Jan'y 1776 in Capt. Job Wright's company in the Regiment commanded by Col. Gooss Van Scoit in the years Service served one year and was discharged in Albany, in Jan'y 1777 I enlised in Col. Seth Warner's Reg't, under Capt. William Mc Ewin and served untill some time in the year 1779 and Rec'd an Ensigns Commission and was transferred to Capt. Gideon Bronsons Company in the same Regiment untill the year 1781 when I was discharged by Gen. Washington as a Super****ay Lieutenant having been promoted that my original declaration is dated April 24th 1818 and my Pension Certificate is numbered 12,149 And I do solemly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in land and Naval Service of the United States in the Revolutionary war passed on the 18th day of March 1818 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- and that I have not nor has any person in Trust for me any property or securities contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income othar than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed. Real Estate none Personal Property two cows and one hog - that I am by occupation a labourer that I am not able to do any kind of Labour that my wife is aged 43 years that she is a weakly woman that I have 6 children under my care, Mary aged 13 years William aged 11 years, Alexander aged 9 years George 7 years Dorothy five years Irena 2 years the children are healthy children. AD 1849, Personally appeared before the subscribing authority, Catharine Grant, a resident of Edwardsburgh in the Province of Canada, aged seventy two years, who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on her oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress, past on the 29th of July, AD 1848, That she is the widow of Benoni Grant who was a Lieutenant in the army of the Revolution, served several campaigns as a private & afterwards he was promoted to the rank of Lieut., has often heard her said husband mention the names of his officers under whom he served, but cannot now recollect but two of them vis Col's Van Schaick & Seth Warner. That her said husband was a pensioner of the United States, and received two hundred and forty dollars per annum. She further declares that she was married to the said Benoni Grant, on the thirtieth (30th) day of August, seventeen hundred and ninety five (1795) by Philip Leeke Esqr a Justice of the Peace, in the Parish of Harmonds, District of Montreal, that her husband the aforesaid Benoni died on the 6th day of March Eighteen --------------------------------------------------------------------------- eighteen hundred and twenty five, that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the 2d day of January eighteen hundred, viz at the time above stated. She further swears that she is now the widow of the said Benoni Grant & that she has not been married since the death of her said husband; that she has never before made application for for a pension. She further declares upon her said oath that the annexed family Record is the only record kept in the family, and the Page headed Memorandum is in the hand writing of her said husband. Sworn to according to the best of her knowledge her information & belief Catharine Grant the day & year above written mark Before me William Bridges, Justice of the Peace & Register of the Probate Court And I further certify that the applicant Catharine Grant is prevented from appearing before a court of Record in consequence of old age & bodily infirmity.
