Gentlemen, I am interested in confirming certain traditions in my family and would like copies of such records as may be on file covering the service of the following in the Revolutionary War: General Gideon Brownson of Sunderland, Vermont Colonel Timothy " Colonel Eli " (reported to have been in the Battle of Bennington) Captain Nathan " (*no Capt. Nathan) Captain Gideon " Unofficial records show that some, if not all, served in Vermont units. Thanking you in advance for your courtesy, I am Very truly yours T. M. Parks (1st Lt. Res-U.S.A.) [Pension office stamp dated Nov 20, 1928] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [Reply] January 29, 1929 T. M. Parks 309 W. 75th Street New York, New York Sir: I advise you that this bureau is unable to furnish the history of a soldier of the Revolution unless a claim for pension or bounty land has been made on account of his services. A careful search of the records fails to show claims on file on account of the services of Colonel Timothy Brownson, Captain Nathan Brownson, or Colonel Eli Brownson. The records show that one Gideon Brownson was Major in Colonel Seth Warner's Regiment, War of the Revolution, was in the battle of Bennington where he received one gun shot wound through his left shoulder, and thirteen other wounds in different parts of his body, in July, 1779 while in an engagement with Indians on Fourteen Mile Island in Lake George. He received Warrant No. 72 for two hundred acres of bounty land, which warrant was issued February 14, 1793, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- for service in the Revolutionary War. There are no further data on file as to his services and none whatever as to his family. As a possible means of obtaining further information relative to the military service of the above named soldiers, it is suggested that you apply to The Adjutant General, War Department, this city. Respectfully, Winfield Scott Commissioner ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [inquiry response] June 4, 1921 Mrs. Cora DeP*y McGuire, Cheboygan, Michigan Madam: In response to your letter dated the 19th ultimo, you are advised that the Rev. War records of this Bureau show that Gideon Brownson was a Major in Colonel Seth Warner's Regiment, and received thirteen wounds at the battles of Bennington and on Lake George. He was all owed 200 acres of bounty land on Warrant No. 72 which issued February 14, 1793. There is no data on file as to his family. Very respectfully, [unreadable signature] Commissioner. ======================================================================
