A. NEWLAND, farmer, was born in Sullivan County, June 11, 1852, the son of JOSEPH and REBECCA (ANDERSON) NEWLAND, the former born November 13, 1809, in this State, the son of JOSEPH, Sr., a Virginian of Irish origin. The father was an extensive farmer and stock dealer, and also a successful financier and merchant. Although beginning a poor man he was at his death, October 27,1867, a wealthy man. He was a Presbyterian. The mother, born in Scott County, Va., June 2. 1818, is the daughter of ISAAC O. ANDERSON, and is still living in this county. Our subject, the third son of four sons and six daughters, was educated at King’s College, Bristol. Our subject was left fatherless at fifteen, and when eighteen began for himself, and the following year took charge of the home farm, which he has since cultivated, with excellent results. January 6, 1886, he married HELEN, a daughter of JESSE BROWN. They have had one daughter. He and his wife are Presbyterians. ===========================================================================
