Thomas Meikleham for 45 years a shipmaster on the great lakes, died at 3:50 a.m. on Thurs- day at his home, 641 Fernwood av. Capt. Meikleham's health had been failing for some time, resulting in a weakened condition of his heart, which caused his death. Capt. Meikleham, who was 66, be- came a lake commander at 21 and was engaged in navigation of the great inland waterways until 10 years ago. He commanded the White Star line ship Greyhound approxi- mately 20 years. During the last fifteen years of his career on the lakes he was engaged also in the wholesale coal business for himself. He retired from his command of the steamer 10 years ago and since then had devoted all of his time to his coal business. Capt. Meikleham was a native of Erin, Ont. He came to Toledo 35 years ago. His body will be taken to Erin for burial. Services will be held in the residence Monday at 2 p.m. The captain is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Meikleham, and three nieces, Mrs. Belle King, Mrs. Alfred Rudd and Mrs. A. B. Cron. As captain of the steamer Grey- hound Capt. Meikleham carried hun- dreds of thousands of passengers be- tween Toledo and Detroit without an accident in the more than 20 years of his command. FIRST COMMAND Capt. Meikleham's first command, early in the '80's was of the side- wheel steamer Flora, carrying pas- sengers from Toledo to Georgian Bay. Later he was master of the package freighter B. W. Blanchard of the Clover Leaf line, operating between Toledo and Buffalo. The veteran navigator was a past president of the Toledo Shipmasters' association, past president of the Toledo Coal Dealers' association, and last year was vice-president of the Natioanal Coal Dealers' association. He was a 32d degree Mason. ===========================================================================
