JOHN M. GRIFFIN This morning Capt. John M. Griffin, one of our best known lake captains, died at his residence after a lingering illness. There are few of the younger captains along the lakes who were better or more favorably known. He was 40 years of age and was born in the county Mayo, Ire- land. He came to this country with his family when but five years of age and from his infancy almost, his life has been spent among vessel men. His last command was in the schooner MAPLE LEAF. He also sailed the JOHN NAVAGH and succesivley brought out the schooners BLAZING GUIDE and MYSTIC STARS, in the two latter of which he owned an interest at the time of his death. About nine years ago he left the lakes and went into the employ of O. *. Hastings & Co. His health began to fail about three years ago and although he took several trips to Colorado, his disease was of such a nature that there was no hope of his recovery. The news of his death, although expected, caused a profound feeling of regret among shipping men and sailors, who best knew the deceased. Flags are at half mast on the shipping in the harbor, at the seamen's union and on other buildings, out of re- spect to his memory. CAPTAIN GRIFFIN leaves a large family who are receiving heartfelt sympathy in their said bereave- ment. His funeral occurs at two o'clock to-morrow afternoon at St. Mary's church.
