OSWEGO, Oct. 28. - CAPTAIN HENRY DAGGETT, who years ago was one of the best known captains on this end of the Great Lakes, was burned to death at 11 o'clock last night in a fire which destroyed his farm house in New Haven, about ten miles east of here. The blaze illuminated the eastern sky and was plainly visible to Oswego people as it burned the house and CAPTAIN DAGGETT. The fire was discovered by C. H. HYDE, who works in WOODWORTH's apple dryer, a quarter mile from the DAGGETT house. He called MR. WOODWORTH, MR. PRYOR and other neighbors and they rushed to the scene. MR. PRYOR smashed in the window of the bedroom where the captain slept, but the interior was like a roaring furnace. The captain usually lived alone. CORONER VOWINKEL was summoned and quickly reached the scene by auto, and as soon as the fire was out search for the body was begun. The charred trunk, the head, legs and arms having been burned off, was found in the cellar under the sitting room some little distance from the bedroom. It was taken to WHITNEY's undertaking rooms in New Haven in a sack. CAPTAIN DAGGETT re- ceived a stroke of paralysis a year ago, since which time he had been quite feeble. It is the belief that he accidentally overturned a lamp and in trying to get out of the house fell a victim to the flames. He was a Mason and arrangements were being made to take him to the Masonic Home at Utica. He is survived by a sister, MRS. SNOW. CAPTAIN DAGGETT in the early *** repre- sented Oswego in the State Legislature. He sailed the steamer Alanson Sumner and was commodore of the fleet of vessel captains who sailed boats for Penfield & Lyon in the palmy days of Oswego's lake commerce. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
