Osego Palladium
26 January 1883


         CAPT. JOHN M. BARROW died at his residence
       on East Fourth street at 11:30 this morning,
       after an illness of about three weeks. CAPT.
       BARROW was born in Lancaster, England, March
       16, 1813, and was therefore nearly seventy
       years of age. He left his native home when
       very young to become a sailor. He made sev-
       eral trips from New York to England and also
       to the West Indies. He came to Oswego in 1835
       and engaged in sailing on the lakes.
         CAPT. BARROW sailed the only full rigged
       brig that ever traded from Oswego. He also
       commanded the schr. Thomas Kingsford and
       other vessels. He was elected alderman of
       the Fourth ward in 1856 and was re-elected
       in 1865. He was a school commissioner for a
       number of terms and was a member of the lo-
       cal board of the Oswego Normal. For a number
       of years past MR. BARROW has been engaged in
       the ship chandlery business. In the year 1845
       CAPT. BARROW was married to MISS MARGARET
       BURGOYNE. His wife, two sons and a daughter
       survive him. CAPT. BARROW was an industrious
       business man, upright and honorable in his
       dealings with his fellow men. In politics he
       was a consistent democrat and quite prominent
       in the councils of the party. He was well
       known along the lakes and his death will be
       generally regretted.
