LESLIE E. BOYCE, FORMERLY OF HENDERSON DIES. STARTED AS CABIN BOY AT 15 Began Career on Sailing Vessels - Commanded R. P. Fitzgerald and the Peavy for Many Years - Dies at Syracuse. (Special to the Times) Henderson, April 1 - CAPTAIN LESLIE E. BOYCE, 68, formerly of this village, who worked his way from cabin boy on old lake sailing vessels to captain of one of the largest vessels of the fleet of the Fitzgerald Company of Milwaukee, grain and iron ore dealers, died in Syracuse yesterday after a brief illness. The funeral will be held in Syracuse and the body will be brought to Henderson tomorrow. Interment will be made at Roberts Corners. About seven years ago CAPTAIN BOYCE retired from the lakes and went to Syracuse where he was engaged in the insurance business. His first wife, who was MISS FLORENCE ADELL WEEKS, of Henderson, died about that time and CAPTAIN BOYCE married MRS. BERTHA PATTEN, a widow who survives him. CAPTAIN BOYCE was born in Henderson 68 years ago this month, the son of CAPTAIN WASHINGTON and ABIGAIL CRITTENDEN BOYCE. His father was a lake captain, and the desire to sail the Great Lakes seized the boy early. At 15 years of age he started his career as a cabin boy. For many years he worked on sailing vessels which have long been withdrawn from use. The last sailing vessel on which he was employed was the Angus Smith. His first steam vessel was the R. P. Fitz- gerald, which he commanded for many years. Then he became captain of the Peavy, and com- manded that vessel until he retired. He was married about 50 years ago to MISS FLORENCE ADELL WEEKS, who died about seven years ago. One son, HAR**Y, was born to them, and he survives his father. CAPTAIN BOYCE is also survived by his second wife, MRS. BERTHA PATTEN BOYCE; one sister, MISS ISABELLE BOYCE of Henderson; one brother, MALCOM A. BOYCE of Erie, P., and two grand- children, DONALD and COROLYN BOYCE. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
