McKENZIE'S DEATH. CAPT. JAMES McKENZIE, for forty years a lake master, died in this city yesterday morning at 2 o'clock, aged 66 years. CAPT. McKENZIE was never married. It is believed he was born on Prince Edward Island, though nothing of his antecedents is known, even by his most intimate acquaintances. He came to Buffalo about forty years ago. CAPT. CLARK remembers him first as mate of the steamer Omar Pasha, about 1859. CAPT. McKENZIE was in the Western Trans- portation Company for a number of years, commanding the steamers Free State and Oneida. He was master of the steamer Mis- souri, which sailed between Chicago and Lake Superior ports. Then he commanded the lighthouse tender Haze for ten years, re- tiring about ten years ago. He had boarded at the Stafford House during the winter for many years, and when he retired from the Haze he went to the Stafford, where he has since lived, spending his time at the offices of the Red Star Line, in which he was heavily interested, visiting friends engaged in marine business and at the Acacia Club, where he seldom missed a day. For some months the captain had been in poor health. Friends here are making a vigorous search for the dead man's rela- tives. A nephew has been located in De- troit. It is believed that he had a brother and two sisters somewhere in Nova Scotia. Owing to the uncertainty, the body will be preserved for some days. Funeral, when held, will be conducted by Hiram Lodge, F. and A. M., of which CAPT. McKENZIE was a member. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Buffalo Evening News Saturday, February 25, 1899 CAPT. MACKENZIE'S FUNERAL. Impressive Service and Masonic Cere- mony Held From the Masonic Temple This Afternoon. The funeral services over the remains of the late CAPT. JAMES MACKENZIE, who died in this city last Tuesday, were held in the scarlet room in the Masonic Temple this afternoon. The funeral was attended by a large number of old per- sonal friends, lake and transportation men, members of the Ismailia Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; of Hiram Lodge, F. & A. M., of Lake Erie Com- mandery, of Buffalo Council, the Buf- falo Chapter, Acacia Club, and other organizations of which CAPT. MACKENZIE was an honored member. The body reposed in a black bread-cloth-covered casket, which stood in the center of the room. Beautiful floral pieces were in abun- dance. The Mystic Shrine sent a star and crescent, the Blue Lodge contri- buted a square and compass, Hiram Lodge sent a cross and crown, and the Buffalo Chapter a floral piece made in the shape of its emblem. The services began at 2:30, the Aeolian Quartette singing "Lead Kindly Light." Rev. Dr. C. C. ALBERTSON, pas- tor of the Delaware Avenue Baptist Church, followed with prayer. After another piece by the quartette, Dr. ALBERTSON delivered a feeling address. The Knight Templar services, under the auspices of Lake Erie Commandery, were then held, and were beautiful and impressive. The Commandery es- corted the body to Forest Lawn, where the usual Masonic services were held. The pall-bearers were CAPT. GEORGE McLEOD, CAPT. PARLAND McFARLAND, GEORGE L. KINGSTON, OLIVER A. JENKINS, HENRY G. FALKE and CAPT.
