MALTBY One of the most widely known Great Lakes captains, WILLIAM G. MALTBY, 78, died Wednesday at his home, 332 Bird Ave. Funeral ser- vices will be held at 2 p.m. to- morrow at Forest Lawn Chapel. The Rev. WALTER V. WATSON, minis- ter of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, will officiate. He was born in Ogdensburg in 1870 and began his career as a seaman at the age of 15. In the early 1900's he joined the Tomlinson Fleet of Duluth and Cleveland and became the first master of the Fred G. Hartwell, which in 1908 was considered the newest and best steel-hulled ship on the lake. He was the recipient of two Carnegie Medals for heroism. In November, 1913, during a heavy storm, the steamer Major founder- ed off Whitefish Point, above the Sault Ste. Marie locks. CAPT. MALT- BY was given the credit for the rescue and towing of the ship to safety after it had been abandoned. The second rescue took place just off Southeast Shoal near the mouth of the Detroit River. He was credited with rescuing the 12 crew members of the steamer M. F. BUTTERS just before it sank. At the time he retired in 1937 he was in command of the 630-foot freighter, James Davison, one of the largest on the lakes. He was a member of the Ogdensburg Lodge of Elks. He is survived by his wife, the former MARY HAND; two sons, COL. CHARLES H. MALTBY, vice-president of the Lincoln National Bank of Syracuse, and WILLIAM H. MALTBY; a brother, CAPT. HERBERT C. MALTBY of Ogdensburg, and two sisters, MRS NELLIE KNUDSON and MRS. FRANKLIN RICHTER. ==========================================================================
