The vessel's machinery was in motion to exhaust the water from its cylinders. Mr. Friends was engaged on some work near the crank pit, when he lost his footing and fell down the shaft. His body was caught in the ponderous machinery, and before it could be stopped he was frightfully mangled, death being instantaneous.
