Bigelow Brothers, Buffalo, N.Y.; 1879 BUFFALO CEMETERIES ------- The formation of a burial-place is generally one of the later things attended to in a new settlement, inasmuch as the utmost effort is needed to support the living and carry on the necessary improve- ments; and unless there should be death from accidental causes, there are no particular reasons to induce the pioneers to bear in mind the fact that any of them will be cut off from their labors, and become the silent tenants of the tomb. Like other settlements in Western New York, Buffalo was lax in attending to the necessity of providing a resting place for the dead; and churches were organized and school houses erected ere it seemed to be noticed that death was as likely to invade here as elsewhere.
