September 12, 1893 CAPT. OADES DEAD ---------------- CAPT. JOHN OADES, shipbuilder, died on Thursday at his late residence, Detroit, after a protracted illness. Deceased, the pioneer shipbuilder on these lakes, was born in England seventy-nine years ago and came to this country at the age of four, when his parents settled in Sackett's Harbor, N.Y. Here he received his education and learned the trade of a shipbuilder. He afterwards went into business at Clayton, N.Y., and about twenty-eight years ago went to Detroit. After working for the Detroit dry- dock company for some time he established a ship- yard of his own at the foot of Dubois street. His enterprise proved a success, his company having built some of the largest and finest steamers on the lakes. Owing to the sickness from which he suffered for the past two years his business has been looked after by his son, WALTER OADES. He left a widow and four children. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
