T. PERCY HAS PASSED AWAY WELL KNOWN RESIDENT SUCCUMBS TO AN ATTACK OF PNEUMONIA Following an illness of less than two weeks SYLVANUS T. PERCY, agent for the Unites States Express Co., in Port Huron, and for many years a well known and highly respected resident of the city, died at his home, 712 Superior street, Sunday morning at 9:45 o'clock. His death was the result of a severe attack of pneumonia. Several days after MR. PERCY became ill, he commenced to recover, and it was thought that he might get well. But it was known later that the end was near, and his relatives were sum- moned to Port Huron. Since October, 1905, when the United States Express Co. opened an office in Port Huron, MR. PERCY had been the agent for the company here, being in charge of all of the business of the company in and out of the city. He had had years of experience in the express business even before this time and while thus engaged had made a reputation as a most efficient of- ficial, being well and favorably known, es- pecially among the business men of Port Huron. Native of Canada. The deceased was a native of Canada, and was born in Ontario county, on February 15, 1844. When a young man he was engaged in the manu- facture of woolen goods in the county of On- tario, and also did a large flour business. He bought wool and grain and sold cloth. Later he bought a mill and a tract of land in the northern part of Ontario county, and went into the lumber business. After one year he disposed of his interest to his brother, who had been associated with him, and engaged with the Can- adian Express Co. as messenger. After running on the trains for 18 months, MR. PERCY went into the drug business in Exeter, Ont., where he remained for two years, before returning to the express company again. He came to Port Huron on September 26, 1876, and was appointed agent for the Canadian Express Co., in Port Huron. He was also agent for the American Ex- press Co. and the Port Huron & Northwestern Express Co. On July 5, 1870, MR. PERCY married MISS SOPHIA BROWNING, of York county, Ont. MRS. PERCY died in March, 1909. When there was a change in express companies and when the National Express Co. entered Port Huron, MR. PERCY was one of the many Canadian Express Co.'s agents who lost their positions, the offices going to men in the employ of other companies. He went to Marine City, where he remained one year and then went to Woodstock, Ont., to take the agency for the Canadian Ex- press Co., in that city. When the United States Express Co. entered Port Huron, MR. PERCY was the man selected by the company to act as agent. That was in 1905, and MR. PERCY continued as agent for the company until his death. A CHARITABLE MAN MR. PERCY was known by his many friends as a kind hearted man. Whenever he heard of sick- ness among any of his acquaintances or friends he was the first to offer his assistance. The deceased is survived by one daughter, MRS. JAMES BINGHAM, of 712 Superior street, this city; one son, CHARLES PERCY, of Detroit, and four brothers, REV. WILLIAM PERCY, of Stouffville, Ont.; JAMES PERCY, of Toronto; URIAH PERCY, of Green River, Ont., and FRED PERCY, of Buffalo. The funeral announcement will be made later. ========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ==========================================================================
