Farrand [p. 194] NICHOLAS ORTH. - NICHOLAS ORTH died at 8:30 p. m. Wednesday. Feb- ruary 19, 1896, at the residence of his son, ADAM ORTH, on Chestnut street. He was a member of WM. SANBORN Post, G. A. R., and was well known. Mr. ORTH enlisted in Company H, First Michigan light artillery, in 1861, from St. Clair county, and served throughout the war in that company. He made an excellent record as a soldier, of which he was justly proud. He was highly respected by his comrades both during and since his service in the army. Mr. ORTH was born in Germany 76 years ago, and had lived in this country 60 years, having come to Detroit with his parents when he was 16 years old. His wife died in Port Huron about seven years ago. Five children now remain to mourn the death of their father. ==========================================================================
