Shipbuilder's Death Recalls Some of the Old Time Schooners Trading from Alpena. The annoncement in the state despatches of the death at his home in Algonac of ABRAHAM SMITH, 91 years of age, recalls memories of early shipping and marine interests and the days when the schooner and bark were supreme on the Great Lakes. ABRAHAM SMITH was one of the pioneer ship builders, the founder of SMITH'S ship yard at Algonac, and especial interest is attached to his career from the fact that he built many boats owned and operated from Alpena. The schooner L. M. Mason was named after a former Alpena man and was built in Algonac. And such old timers as the Ocean Wave, Oliver Mitchell, Alice Spencer, Wolverine and Sultana! The early mariners, the men who sailed before the mast, well remember these schooners. Nearly all lumber carriers at one time or another, they made money for their owners, but have long since been consigned to the boneyard. And the good old days of the lake sailing craft will never come back. ==========================================================================
