There had been a large crowd in town all day, and up to evening everything passed of nicely when there was to have been a grand display of fireworks off Military street bridge. The platform was loaded, and large pieces placed in position, with L. N. MINNIE, J. L. BLACK, THOS. COOK and Mr. WITHEY in charge. By some strange fatality when the "Welcome" motto was lighted the fire took to a large Washington figure piece, and then to other mottoes, and almost in an instant the whole platform was en- circled with flaming pieces. COOK, BLACK and WITHEY saw the danger at a glance and managed to escape at a great risk, the first two in comparative safety while the latter was badly burned about the face and hands, and though suffering great pain and injury is not seriously hurt. But Mr. MINNIE failed to escape and by the time the fire department could quench the flames and reach him the poor fellow was burned to a crisp, and only recognized by a bunch of keys. ==========================================================================
