CLAIR COUNTY This county is situated in the east part of the State, and is bounded north by Sanilac county, east of Lake Huron and St. Clair river, south by Lake St. Clair and Macomb county, and west by Lapeer county. It is traversed by Belle, Pine and Black rivers, and Mill creek. The soil is sandy and for the most part fertile, and the surface is undulating, heavily timbered in the north with pine, and in the south and west with hard timber. The county is rapidly improving in agriculture, and its lumbering facilities are immense. There is a large trade done in rafting. The county contains 948 square miles. County seat St. Clair. Preston, postmaster. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PORT HURON A post village in the town of Port Huron and St. Clair County, and is situated at the confluence of Black and St. Clair rivers, two miles south of Lake Huron, has a good harbor and superior facilities for ship building, and is largely en- gaged in the lumber business. Great amounts of excellent pine timber are sent down Black river, and manufactured or shipped here. It is the eastern terminus of the Port Huron and Lake Michi- gan Railroad, the western terminus of the Grand Trunk Railroad, which extends from the eastern to the western limits of the Canadas. It is one of the greatest lumber markets in the west. Its annual exports amount to $2,000,000. It contains eleven saw mills, large lumber and ship yards, six hotels, of which the Larned House is of the first class. There are several fine stores and a foundry. Fort Gratiot is about one mile north of the village. The Port Huron Commercial is pub- lished weekly. Population about 3,500; distant from Detroit 77 miles; from Lansing 113 miles. CLAIR This is the county seat of St. Clair county and is situated at the confluence of Pine river with St. Clair river. It contains a court house, jail, 5 churches, 28 stores of various kinds, 7 steam saw mills, several hotels, of which Brown's Hotel (D. E. Solis, proprietor) is a first class hotel, second to none in the State. It has a Masonic Hall and one I. O. of O. F.; several sash and blind factories, cloth factory, livery stables, carriage and wagon factories - and has steam boats calling daily from ports north and south.
