T. Andreas & Co., Chicago - 1883 [575] HENRY HOWARD, son of JOHN and NANCY HOWARD, is a native of the State of Michigan, and was born in the city of Detroit. During early childhood, his parents came to Port Huron, and he grew up and received his education here. Upon reaching early manhood, he entered the office of his father, who was largely engaged in the lumber trade, and for the past thirty years he has had the active and successful management of the business, and has been prominently identified with commercial interests of this city. Mr. HOWARD has been connected with the First National Bank since its organization, and has served as its President most of the time. He was elected President of the Narrow Gauge Railroad in 1880, and held that posi- tion two years. He was twice elected to the State Legislature, and represented this district in that body in 1871 and 1873; during his second term he refused to allow his name to be used for Speaker of the House. He served as Chairman of the Committee of Ways and Means, was Alderman of the city for fourteen years, was elected a member of the Board of Estimates, and served as President of the board; in spring of 1882 was elected Mayor of the city, and is also President of the Board of Education. He is President of the Northern Transit Company of Sarnia. In 1855, Mr. HOWARD was united in marriage to Miss ELIZABETH E. SPAULDING, a native of New York State ; they have two children - one son, JOHN H., and one daughter, E. LOUIE. ===========================================================================
