T. Andreas & Co., Chicago - 1883 [573] E. W. HARRIS, attorney at law, was born in Orange County, Vt., May 4, 1831. His parents came to Michigan in 1837, and settled in Oakland County. He was raised and received his education there. He studied law in his father's office and attended a law school in New York State. He was admitted to the bar in 1854. After his admission, he came to Port Huron and engaged in the practice of law. The following year he formed a copartnership with Hon. OMAR D. CONGER, present United States Senator, and they were associated together until the latter was elected to Congress. Mr. HARRIS was appointed Judge of the Circuit Court to fill the unexpired term of Judge MITCHELL, and was afterward elected to the same position and remained on the bench for nine years. He was also Judge of Probate seven years, and held the office of Prosecuting Attorney for two years. He is one of the oldest practitioners in the northeastern part of the State. Judge HARRIS was united in marriage October 1, 1857, to Miss SARAH JANE WHITMAN, a native of New York State.
