T. Andreas & Co., Chicago - 1883 [568] CAPT. CHARLES R. ELY deceased, was born in St. Lawrence, New York State, July 19, 1839. He commenced sailing for the Northern Transpor- tation Co. in 1855. He was united in marriage January 9, 1865, to Miss MARY MITCHELL, of Wolf Island, Ontario. For a time they lived in Ogdensburg, N.Y., and afterward in Kingston, Canada West, from which place they removed to Port Huron in 1878. With the exception of three years, CAPT. ELY sailed for the Northern Transporation Company from 1855 to 1880. He was a very skillful sailor, and had a large experience in the marine service. After a lingering illness he died of paralysis, June 28, 1882. He was a kind husband and father, and his death was mourned by a large circle of friends.
